Raeann’s Qualifications & Experience
Raeann Mettler, PHD
Scientist. Educator. Public Lands Advocate.
I believe South Dakota's public lands should be managed with the same values that have guided my professional career: responsible stewardship, sound science, fiscal accountability, and a commitment to future generations.
My experience spans environmental research, natural resource management, education, and community leadership. I bring a practical understanding of the importance of protecting our state's land and water resources while ensuring they provide lasting benefits for South Dakota's public schools.
Natural Resource Management & Public Lands
My early career included working as a seasonal field technician with the U.S. Forest Service in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana, as well as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska. These experiences gave me firsthand knowledge of public land management, field research, ecosystem health, and the challenges of balancing multiple uses of natural resources.
Working outdoors taught me that responsible stewardship requires careful observation, long-term planning, and an understanding of how decisions made today affect the landscape for generations.
Environmental Science & Research
As a scientist and researcher, I have experience investigating environmental conditions and their implications for ecosystems and human health. My work includes studying air and water quality, environmental contaminants, and the relationships between environmental conditions and public health.
I bring expertise in scientific research, data analysis, environmental monitoring, and translating complex technical information into practical, evidence-based recommendations.
These skills are directly relevant to evaluating land use, mineral development, environmental risks, and the long-term productivity of South Dakota's public lands.
Education & Research Leadership
Throughout my career, I have helped develop and lead research and educational programs that create opportunities for students to engage in hands-on science.
My work includes coordinating collaborative research initiatives, mentoring students, and building partnerships among educational institutions, researchers, and communities, including tribal communities.
I understand the value of investing in education because I have seen firsthand how meaningful learning opportunities can change students' lives.
As Commissioner, I will keep the central mission of the office in focus: managing South Dakota's school trust assets responsibly to generate sustainable revenue for public education.
Data-Driven Management & Accountability
My professional experience includes managing complex research datasets, evaluating evidence, coordinating projects, and communicating findings to diverse audiences.
I believe these skills can help modernize how South Dakota evaluates public land assets, monitors leases, identifies opportunities to improve revenue, and communicates decisions to the public.
South Dakotans deserve transparent, accountable management of the lands and resources held in trust for our schools.
Community Service & Leadership
Beyond my research career, I have remained committed to public service, science education, and strengthening local communities.
My work with students, educators, and community partners has reinforced my belief that effective leadership begins with listening, building relationships, and making decisions grounded in evidence and the public interest.
I am running for Commissioner of School and Public Lands to bring scientific expertise, practical land management experience, and transparent, accountable leadership to an office entrusted with supporting South Dakota's public schools and protecting our state's natural resources for future generations.
